The nine illustrations in this puzzle are the work of 19th century artist Walter Crane, an English artist and book illustrator. They appeared in a short book entitled "A Floral Fantasy in an Old English Garden" (1899) and describes a stroll through a garden. Crane himself is depicted lying under a tree (upper right panel) prior to being led through through the garden by a fairy, where he encounters a series of human characters dressed as flowers and plants. These are arrayed in elaborate costumes of petals, tendrils and leaves, engaged in somber reflection and making visual puns about the plant’s common names. It is a delightful book translated into a wonderful puzzle, skillfully arranged and artfully presented by the folks at A&F PC.

Kate E. Bunce (1856-1927) was an English painter and poet associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Bunce studied at the Birmingham School of Art in the 1880s and exhibited across the U.K. A devout Christian, she painted a series of decorative pieces in churches, often in conjunction with her sister, a metalworker and watercolourist. The painting is based on a poem titled "The Staff and Scrip" by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
